Experienced a power interruption and upon restoration everything seemed disconnected. My Netgear GS116NA displayed no lights or signals at all. Testing the AC adapter with a multimeter revealed unstable readings, suggesting the switch failed. A replacement costs around $90, but since it’s over ten years old, I’m exploring cheaper alternatives. I used it with my router and wired devices, but didn’t use all ports. Currently, the Netgear GS110EMX is available for $200-250 and offers 10+ ports, though it’s managed. Unmanaged models are scarce; most higher-speed options are managed. Are there more budget-friendly choices beyond that?

Initially, 10-port switches are extremely uncommon. Expect around 16 ports instead of 8. Next, 8-port multi-gig switches will cost significantly less than their 16-port counterparts. If full 16 ports aren’t necessary for 2.5/10GbE speeds, choose the essential configuration since costs rise sharply. Lastly, if you’re not interested in the managed GS110EMX, consider the GS110MX or Zyxel XGS1210-12. You don’t need to fear managed switches; most non-enterprise models function identically at launch, but unlock extra capabilities through their management portals.
