I'm really struggling to install the operating system...
Hello, I have a query about setting up Windows on an older machine. I'm planning to install Windows XP Pro SP3 64-bit but haven't been able to get it working. I've tried five different ISO images, but nothing has worked. Rufus doesn't let me create a bootable drive, it fails during scanning and the GUI setup just crashes with a missing file warning. When I try the text setup, it functions and starts the installation. After finishing, it mentions a missing file named nfokrnl.exe. People suggest going to the console and copying that file. I attempted this but received an access error. Could you assist me with installing Windows XP?
Your hard drive could be malfunctioning. Consider taking precautions to prevent further issues.
Copy an ISO file onto a CD, then try another USB drive on another computer and install it on the hard drive of a different machine before connecting it to the XP system.
There is no SP3 for Windows XP 64-bit. It's based on Server 2003, which never got a SP3. This was before the codebases were aligned. I think you have a bunk iso, there's no reason Rufus would fail to make a bootable drive from a valid iso even if your machine couldn't run it. Edit: If you only look for "sp3" x64 iso's you'll only *ever* get bunk images. Find an official XP x64 SP2 iso and try installing from that. If it still doesn't work then there could be hardware issues, but it's far more likely the iso is just bad. Edit2: On further thought, I don't even know if an official XP x64 SP2 iso was ever released. You might end up on some really shady sites trying to find it.
I would highly suggest you install 32-bit version of Windows XP. 64-bit XP is a disaster that reach Windows Me levels. Oh, and good luck with your drivers for the 64-bit version (unless you are lucky). This version of XP was only sold exclusively on order from Microsoft. It was never released on computers by OEMs on consumer market, nor retail stores. It is for a reason MS did this. The whole OS was an experimentation of Windows On Windows 64 (WOW64) technology. It helped paved 64-bit/32-bit support Windows of today. So you are jumping in to "version 1.0"
Hello! Thanks for sharing... I've just installed Windows XP Pro SP3 32bit. Could someone guide me through the next steps?
Everything was done correctly, but after installation a hal.dll is missing. I checked my USB drive and all files are named Example: hal.dl_. Is this the expected default setup?
