Simply insert the new drive, start Windows, and transfer files from your existing drive to the new one before installing a fresh operating system on the old one. It should function perfectly. During the installation of W8, ensure you're installing it on the original drive so you don't accidentally format your backup on the new one. If uncertain, disconnect the new drive after backing up everything you need and then install the OS on the old drive instead.
