I just received a laptop with an SSD, but I haven’t installed it yet. I attempted cloning and checking the BIOS, but those steps didn’t help (it still won’t boot from the SSD). I’m considering a full Windows reinstall now. Do I need to use the activation code, or is it linked to my Microsoft account?

The Windows key will turn on automatically when connected to Wi-Fi. Yes, using the same Microsoft account during login should work without problems.

It seems linking your key to your Microsoft account should trigger activation automatically once you log in with an internet connection.

Ensure your product key is registered under a Microsoft account and logged in on the new device. The key should automatically transfer and stay valid. For consumer OEM keys, most systems require one use per computer, so you’ll need a fresh key for the second installation. If you need to do this legally, follow proper procedures.

If the key is tied to your Microsoft account (set up in Windows settings), simply log in with your account during the fresh installation. This method works on a single device only—use one license per computer. If you need another laptop, you’ll have to purchase an additional license. Alternatively, you can install Windows without activation for free, though it incurs no cost.
