Ultimately, I accessed the GPU which was quite dusty. The thermal pads felt worn out, so I swapped them out. I purchased replacements from Amazon; you’ll need 2x1mm, 1x0.5mm, and 1x2mm. A Reddit post shared a photo with placement guidance and sizing details. Right now, the GPU’s hotspot is around 80 degrees, dropping about 30 degrees during high-quality graphics. The fans were doing their usual behavior before.
I installed a video card in a clean setup running Bionic, and it still performed well after three years. Added some Noctua thermal paste, and after two years there were no unexpected thermal problems. My fan behaved normally until the black screen appeared, followed by occasional crashes—sometimes a reboot was needed, other times just holding the power button.
