I recently decided to upgrade my graphics card to the best model available: an RX 6700 XT, which originally cost about 600 €. At first it seemed like a good choice, but now I’m facing issues since my i5-8400 is becoming a major bottleneck. I need to replace both my CPU and motherboard. I’m considering the i3-12100F, a budget motherboard such as the H610 or the B660—though the latter isn’t great, it might suffice. Alternatively, I’ve heard about the Ryzen 5500 5G. I’d rather stick with Intel, but an AMD option could have offered better deals and more overclocking potential, though it would have limited cache and used PCIe 3.0.

The 5500 remains useful for a longer time because it supports six cores and twelve threads. The i3 offers only four cores or eight threads, which is the bare essential for modern gaming. The PS4 and Xbox One are retiring soon, with upcoming titles needing more than the current eight-thread limit.

The Ryzen 5600 is typically a better choice for less than a dollar more, around $10. The 12100F and 5500 offer an upgrade over the 8400 but aren't justified unless you need it. A 5600 (non-G) or 12400F would be a better option. A CPU bottleneck isn't always an issue. Are you getting the performance you expect?
