Identifying performance issues related to the processor.
I've been testing my setup since purchasing a new GPU from a friend at a low cost. My CPU seems to be the main limitation right now, but I'm unsure how much improvement overclocking could bring. I've already ordered watercooling components, so I'd prefer not to switch platforms. According to what I know, the top choice for this model is likely the 7700K. My current setup includes an Asus Maximus IX Hero i5-6600K running at 4.0GHz, 16GB DDR4 memory at 3000MHz, and a Titan X (Pascal) processor.
Yes, a 4 core 4 thread chip will likely be a major constraint... even if you manage to get a 6700k and push it to 4.6 GHz, which is generally straightforward and would bring about significant gains. Regarding platform changes, all AIOs use AM4 and 115X interfaces, so upgrading to almost any system should be smooth. If you're building a custom loop, using a 9700k or 9900k still works with a 1151 socket, so your water block will function fine. Honestly, a 6700k or 7700k is the best option since these models support BIOS updates (it should after a fresh BIOS release).
I placed the order for the custom loop components from EK, ensuring the 7700K remains compatible with my board. I might attempt to acquire a 7700K from an OC. The 6600K will reach 5.0GHz, though the temperatures are somewhat challenging.
Only having four threads at a time is likely to slow things down, unless the game is very old with limited threading... Right now, that’s rarely the case. Yes, a dedicated block would be compatible with any modern Intel processor. You could use a Z390 to achieve a 9900k speed, and the waterblock would still function.
