They mentioned their CPU could slow down the GPU upgrade, so they're considering a $300 budget for a CPU, motherboard, or RAM combo. They're currently using an i5 4690K with 16GB RAM and a GTX 970. They're exploring options around $300 and are checking prices at PCPartPicker, Amazon, and other stores. They're also watching some tutorials from Paul's Hardware and Linus for guidance on the best CPU choice.
The Ryzen 2600x could fit within that budget. 1600 AF is the top you can achieve. Excellent value as well. https://www.newegg.com/amd-ryzen-5-1600/...003V-00043
Six cores plus twelve threads remains better than four even with Haswell IPC. I upgraded my dad’s system from a 3570K at 4.2ghz to just 1600, boosting performance noticeably where it counted. His 1600 runs at around 3.9ghz on regular voltages. The 3600 is clearly a stronger CPU, but considering his budget, the 1600 offers a solid overall improvement.
I see it's an improvement, though it doesn't justify moving to a new system. The 4690K remains a strong desktop with more than four cores not yet essential. It still handles tasks very efficiently. He saw noticeable gains in areas that mattered most? What was your father’s primary use for his machine and what specific benefits did he notice? Emphasizing cores versus cores is a clever marketing phrase, but for a $300 investment... I’d expect a significantly higher return. I’d also consider the storage options and how the GPU and display performance played into it.
