Lately I've been stretching cables while gaming, and my ping stays around 30 ms. Every five seconds it jumps up to 300–2000 ms. I tried connecting the cable directly from the modem to the PC, but that didn’t fix it—so it’s probably the line itself. My ISP said everything looks okay and suggested getting a new router, but I wasn’t sure what I was dealing with.
It seems there could be an ARP storm or similar issue. Are you connecting multiple routers or switches, and is there a potential loop involved? Also consider Wi-Fi activity. If needed, run Microsoft Message Analyzer to log traffic patterns, particularly around the peak times, to identify any unusual behavior.
Determine if it's just a modem or a modem plus router in one device. If it's a basic modem, the problem likely isn't related to the router.
