Ideal RAM option for an R5 1600AF/2600 configuration
I'm preparing my first serious gaming rig and have been checking options for RAM. I aim for around 16GB, but I've learned that memory speed and timing really impact Ryzen performance. Since I'm on a budget, I'm looking for the best balance between cost and performance. Right now, I'm considering a 2x8GB kit with 3200mhz CL16 modules priced near £70. I'm also thinking about pairing it with an 1600AF or 2600 module, a B450 Steel Legend motherboard, and a 1660 graphics card. Please let me know the current prices in the UK.
Buildzoid and Hardcore Overclocking share some content about picking RAM for Ryzen processors. It's worth checking their videos for tips.
I just upgraded my son's PC with the B450M Steel legend and a 2700, paired it with a 2070 (the video is available on YouTube under my username). I installed 3200mhz CL16 RAM. You won't see a noticeable change in gaming. Switching to higher-end RAM like 3600mhz would likely improve performance only in tests, not necessarily in actual play. In reality, the extra expense might be better used for a stronger graphics card, such as a 2060 or 5700. Even then, the difference between a 1600AF/1660 setup and a 3600 with 2060 would be clear only on a high-refresh monitor. If you don’t have one soon, save your money—the 1600AF/1660 combo will suffice. Enjoy building!
