You're planning a home server setup with Hex OS, VMs running Windows 11 and Linux distributions. You'll need reliable components for performance and stability. For CPU choices, consider mid-range to high-end options like Intel Core i5 or i7, or AMD Ryzen 5/7 series. Motherboards should support the required RAM, expansion slots, and connectivity. Look for models with robust cooling solutions since you'll have multiple VMs running. A separate enclosure for hard drives will help manage noise and improve airflow.

basically anything with a core can work. Start by checking liquidation sites. I favor govdeals, but there are many options that offer contracts to sell old gear like server parts. If you prefer building yourself (which is tough since server chassis cost a lot), check out some x99 salvage boards. I recently bought a dual socket mobo from Machinist for $100, upgraded it with $100 of RAM, and picked up two 14c/28t xeons on eBay for $15 each. It’s now running Proxmox smoothly.

You also need to consider installing a GPU.

What is your spending limit? I’m running on a Ryzen 5900XT and spent $199, so I want to know what you’re comfortable with.

Budget around $700 for the GPU, with some flexibility.

I assembled it using an i3 8350x with 32GB RAM. It supports 14 drives, and with the 2060 included, I’m confident it will stay under $500.

Unknown details about hardware or user count prevent a precise recommendation. A device ranging from a 20-year-old Celeron to a dual EPYC 9965 can handle the task.

It's a home server setup. I intend to host a DCS world server there, possibly alongside a Brick Rigs rig. I also aim to send some Blender render jobs onto it when I can learn how to use the software. I don't anticipate more than eight users, but I'd like
