I plan to switch to a new CPU on November 20th. Right now I’m using a 2200g on the X470, and I need to decide if it’s wiser to hold off for more Ryzen 9 5900x chips or go with a Ryzen 9 3950x instead.

x470 boards aren't compatible with the 5000 series yet—they might be available after January. If you're patient, consider getting a 5000. Also, let me know your PC usage and other parts; the jump from 2200G to 5900X is quite a leap.

I think 400 series boards won’t get Ryzen 5000 support until next year, though I might be mistaken. My mistake—missed Boggy’s comment.

If you have the budget, the 5900x will likely perform much better than the 3900x. As mentioned, delaying until January might mean you don’t need to replace your motherboard.
