You're planning to upgrade your IBM XSeries 226 server by swapping its single-core Xenon CPU for a dual-core Xeon X7460, aiming for 12 cores. Since both share the same 604 socket, compatibility seems possible in theory. However, confirm whether the Xeon X7460 fits the motherboard you're using—it's important to verify that the board supports the required features and form factor.

Uncertain about the compatible CPUs. Spent little time researching, but here are some references you can explore further. This configuration appears to work with: 1 or 2 MB ECC Level-2 cache, Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T) xSeries at 2.8, 3.0, or 3.4 GHz / 800 MHz, and Xeon processors with EM64T (13N0671), 3.0 GHz / 800 MHz, or 3.2 GHz / 800 MHz.

I doubt those six main chips will function, 604 has been used extensively, and not every chip will work across all systems. Check the CPU compatibility list.

I checked multiple sources for details on the compatible CPU for the motherboard, but found limited information. It seems the motherboard might not be widely known or popular, making it harder to locate specifics. Let me know if you need further assistance!
