Hello everyone, I’m running an i9-9900K with 4 cores and 9 threads. It has 32GB DDR4 memory at 3200MHz and a RTX 4090 Windforce MEG Z390 ACE AW3423DW monitor. I’m noticing significant drops in frame rates across various games, even though my CPU usage is around 20-30%. For example, in Borderlands 3, FPS falls to 15 during intense moments, and similar issues appear in Battlefield and Call of Duty. After a full system reset, driver updates, and BIOS changes, the problem persists. My question is whether this processor is really limiting performance or if another factor is at play. I’m considering upgrading to an i7 and using it in a VR setup, but I want to know if that’s a good move. What alternatives do you have?

Could you clarify what issue you're facing? The part about a bottleneck in your post title suggests there might be a formatting or clarity concern—please share more specifics so I can help effectively.

Your processor might be limiting performance, so expect usage above 20-30% as it works hard to send information to the GPU. Have you adjusted the game settings?

It looks like your low frame rates are really impacting your gaming experience. On Battlefield, you're seeing 140-200 FPS initially, then dropping to 20 and recovering to 200 again. This is quite annoying. It seems the issue persists even in full resolution on ultra settings, without any RT or DLSS. Removing your OC didn’t help and reinstalling only the essentials didn’t fix it. Other games like Hogwarts Legacy work well for you.

Usage figures seem very limited. At 9900K it typically operates at high temperatures—what are the observed temperatures during operation?

I owned a [email protected] with full cores, max temp reached 77°C. Purchased an RTX 4080 and had poor experience. The minor frame drops and stutter during Hell Let Loose, Dying Light 2, and Tiny Tina's Wonderland were extreme. The 9900k simply couldn't keep up, even at 20-30% load—it wasn't fast enough. Once upgraded to a 7700x, all issues disappeared and I saw significant gains in average FPS across those games.

It really heats up a lot, yet it maintains its timing. I believe it reached its highest point around 90°C.

The CPU will experience a slight delay due to the 4090. I’d likely have chosen a 9900k for a better GPU, probably a 3080 or 3090 model. Anything higher will show its age clearly. The 4090 mainly demands a strong CPU that matches your budget. If you can’t afford it, buying a 4090 isn’t worthwhile—it’s just powerful enough to need a capable processor. Also, BF and COD aren’t great for this kind of performance; they’re not well optimized and often have many issues on large maps or in Battle Royale modes where consistent results matter. Try 3D Mark to check your scores, and keep an eye on FPS in VR since it’s sensitive there.

These are the same issues I'm facing with the same games... it's nearly impossible to play unless I hide and can't see anything.

Your VR setup is using a 2080TI, which means it's handling the resolution well without major issues.
