It doesn't seem like a good upgrade. GN just released a fresh review using updated benchmarks, and the 9600k performed well even at the same clock speed as the 8600k.

Sure, I thought if these sockets are the final ones, it’s best to maximize performance by using 8 cores. Trading my chip to a friend and getting a Newegg credit made the decision much simpler.

Installed at 9700k in a gigabyte gaming 5. It looks normal at stock and started up properly on the first boot. That’s a good sign. I’ll follow up after thermal and stress tests.

It looks a bit odd at first, but I'll share some screenshots. This unit clearly doesn't have a 95W TDP. It really needs us to set the voltage, was running at 1.4 during the turbo boost. It handled 130W easily... temperatures climbed to about 70°C but stayed stable. The VRMS reached around 63°C. On the older 8600k model, VRMS was in the mid-40s to low 50s... I'll post more shots soon. I'm planning to stabilize the voltage for better efficiency and aim for 4.8 volts per core with low temps and solid performance.

One core runs at up to 4.9 GHz, two cores up to 4.8 GHz, five cores up to 4.7 GHz, and eight cores up to 4.6 GHz. When all eight cores are engaged, the frequency stays around 4.8 GHz consistently, not fluctuating. Core voltage also increases slightly, likely due to the MCE feature being active.

Thanks for the guidance, I plan to disable MCE in the BIOS. I noticed it during the last auto-boot.
