i7-9700K at 4.6GHz reaches 100°C quickly
Hey! Yesterday my Astro stopped working when playing CoD. Astro thought it might be because my CPU was using too much power and the system was shutting down USB ports. I ran a benchmark and found my CPU is running at 4.6GHz with turbo enabled, but temperatures are high—about 35-40°C when idle and up to 100°C under load. I’m using a Corsair H100i cooler with two fans. Do you think cleaning the inside could help? Also, turning off turbo would definitely hurt performance, right? Thanks for your advice before heading to the store!
Prime95 will likely cause more strain than gaming itself. Monitor temperatures during gameplay. If heat issues persist, consider limiting power usage rather than shutting down completely. That way, you maintain some performance boost while controlling maximum energy draw. Edit: should explain this applies after confirming cooling is clean and functioning properly.
I completed some cleaning and testing. During gaming, I reached 90°C, so I disabled Turbo Boost and now I’m running at a steady 60 (max). My Astro keeps disconnecting, and I even adjusted a USB setting in Device Manager that tells the computer to turn it off for power savings. I’m still puzzled about what’s happening.
Astro refers to the CPU temperature. When it reaches 100°C, it triggers thermal throttling which reduces performance. At around 90°C while hot, the system should continue functioning adequately.
My headset is Astro, thank you. I disabled Turbo Boost and it’s now running at a steady 58°C. I also tried a reroll to Windows 10 to check for improvements, which seems to be working well so far. It’s a bit disappointing since I really enjoyed the W11 version, but I’m happy with this system now.
