i7 8750h processor speed decreases during performance tests
Hi there, I saw a concern with my laptop. When I run benchmark tools like TSbench or Cinebench, the CPU clock speed drops to 3200 MHz instead of the usual 3800 MHz at idle. The original speed was 4000 MHz, and it seems the power isn’t being delivered properly. I’ve attached a screenshot of the throttle settings, and I’m hoping someone can help me figure this out.
It's slowing down due to reaching thermal and power constraints. It won't maintain full boost if temperatures rise or power draw hits 45w, and the system warns you're nearing 100°C—exceeding load limits will likely surpass 45w too. Any frequency above the core 2.2ghz is treated as an attempt to boost that chip.
The issue isn't a fixable problem. Your laptop's cooling system simply can't maintain maximum performance continuously. Even with adequate cooling, it would still reduce clock speed due to the 45w power consumption limit. That's the standard behavior of laptop CPUs.
Remove all other software except Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. Run Cinebench R15 to verify 3.9Ghz across all cores.
Wrong, makers supply all CPUs with specific voltage levels that often exceed safe limits. This happens to avoid BSODs on new devices. Users can easily lower the voltage and save a few cents without any issues. The CPU also performs better, handling higher boost frequencies for extended periods.
