I assembled this system 3 or 4 years ago with a Corsair h115i and pushed it to 4.8ghz. After returning home after a week away, I noticed the machine powered on but the CPU was at 100°C. I’m unsure how long it ran at that temperature. Since then, I’ve avoided pushing the CPU beyond 100°C without issues. Now I own a NZXT Kraken X62, which performs much better. The CPU can’t be overclocked to 4.8ghz without reaching 87°C under load. However, when idle at 4.5ghz it drops from 50°C to 35°C after switching from Corsair to NZXT AIO. Could prolonged exposure to 100°C have hardened the thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink? Would cleaning help improve cooling?

I implemented your guidance and cleared the CPU with a sharp tool, adding minimal thermal grizzly conductonaut. Temperatures fell from 87°C to 56°C at 4.8GHz.
