I'm considering upgrading from a 6700 to a 7700K, but my motherboard uses a Z170 chipset. I'm not sure if it supports the newer chip. The board is an ASUS Maximus VIII Formula, and I don’t have the funds for a new one.
Yes, it works, simply ensure the BIOS is current. I wouldn't label it an upgrade; it's nearly identical with minor improvements in binning.
I considered the 8700k but the manufacturer seems unable to support it directly, or perhaps an update is required.
I’d just swap your motherboard and CPU, then upgrade to an 8700K once the B-class models arrive in December.
Based on my own use, upgrading from an i7 6700 to the i7 7700k doesn't really matter much at 1080p and even less at 1440p or 4K. It seems like a waste of money since both chips are built on the same process node. Overclocking the CPU only helps a bit at 1080p with a top-end GPU, but not much beyond that. You'll likely hit GPU limits no matter what. I think it's better to save for the more advanced i7 9700k with a 10nm Z390 chipset.
