i7 6700 Overclocking Question
i7 6700 Overclocking Question
Hello,
I have a query regarding overclocking my new i7 6700k. The main concern is whether the vcore is being correctly recognized when adjusting it in the BIOS. I experimented with the overclock yesterday, gradually increasing from stock settings, but reached a limit at 4.6 Ghz. I followed the standard procedure by raising the voltage, and the most recent test used 1.37v at that frequency—no crashes occurred during stress testing, though Prime95 reported a single core failure after roughly 20 minutes (consistent with the same issue). Notably, a similar result appeared when running a stress test at 1.37v with 4.7 Ghz.
I suspect the voltage might be insufficient for a stable overclock at this moment. However, during these tests, CPUID and HWMonitor displayed vcore readings around 1.30, rarely exceeding it. It seems the software could be causing instability, but I’m unsure if there’s another factor limiting performance.
My motherboard is a GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-Z170X-Gaming 7, paired with an Nvidia 980 Ti GPU and a SeaSonic Platinum SS-860XP2 860W ATX 12V power supply.
Please let me know if you need further information. Thanks!
It's not unusual for this to occur, but there are a few factors to consider. Wrong voltage readings from the program, or voltage drop caused by the additional current drawn from the CPU. If it's the voltage drop, you're at maximum capacity and won't get any more output from the board or CPU.
