Hello, I'm deciding between a CPU options for my Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 7. I won’t be gaming, just running virtual machines, lots of Chrome tabs, and coding. The Intel i7 is around $150-200 more, but I’m not sure if that matters much in real use, not just benchmarks. I’m excited to get an AMD 4000 laptop in about five weeks.

Which laptop are we talking about? There are noticeable variations in the chips across different models, but most people won’t see much of a difference—just a slight increase in clock speed.

Are you looking for a portable device? For handling many VMs or coding tasks, you'll need more processing power. A desktop with a Ryzen 3000 series chip is both more affordable and better matched to your needs.

in college i often connected to a desktop at home to handle virtual machines, but if that isn't possible, i believe ram and storage should take priority over choosing i5/i7 when it comes to labs or testing (no actual workloads inside the vms).

Both systems have 16GB storage, which is the maximum available. I’ll likely run lab work and tests, but for more practical testing I might switch to OSes like Kali.
