I just got an i7 8700k CPU to replace the older i5. This machine was already built, so I’m slowly making the switch. I’ve tried everything—from updating the BIOS to inspecting the wiring and swapping components. Sometimes lights flicker and fans spin briefly before stopping again. I’m not very tech-savvy, so any simple advice would be super helpful. Thanks! Also, my motherboard compatibility check came back positive.

The motherboard likely uses a standard chipset like Intel’s Z690 or similar. A Ryzen 7 8-core with B450 would cost around the same as the retail i7, just depending on the specific components and region.

What processor model were you using previously? Did you verify that the new i7 fits your motherboard? For example, 6000 and 7000 series CPUs differ from 8000 and 9000 series ones.

As mentioned, I'm still getting familiar with PC components, and this unit was ready-made, so I'm not sure about the chipset.

This model doesn't match the 8700 socket. It's identical in design but incompatible. Bring the CPU back to the shop.

Please share the motherboard name if you have one, or let me know if you're focusing only on gaming. Your monitor's resolution and refresh rate are important too. I'm assuming an i5 processor works well at 60Hz for gaming. What graphics card are you using?
