Hello there. I recently pushed my Intel I5 8600k to 4.8 GHZ at 1.35 volts. Attempting to overclock it further to 4.9 GHZ caused the system to crash during a stress test. I’m planning to raise the voltage to reach 5.0 GHZ, but when I go above 1.35 volts, the BIOS displays white to red values. Is this typical behavior? I have an MSI Z370 Gaming Carbon board and a Corsair TX550M PSU. Thank you.

The maximum overclock potential for your 8600K depends on securing a quality cooling solution. As of December 1, 2017, the percentage of I5-8600k chips that can reach a high voltage under aggressive settings varies: 84% at 5.0, 65% at 5.1, 38% at 5.2, and 13% at 1.4v. The 1.4v setting is regarded as the most stable safe option. You should aim for this to achieve the best performance. The BIOS likely triggers a warning because it detects this level. Be content with your current setup—there will be minimal variation between 4.8 and 5.0.

How far you can overclock your 8600K depends on getting a solid case. As of December 1, 2017, the percentage of I5-8600k chips that can reach a high vcore around 1.4 with a stable 4.9 98% are the best. At 5.0 it's 84%, 5.1 drops to 65%, 5.2 to 38%, and 5.3 to 13%. The 1.4v is seen as the most reliable safe level. You should aim for that if you want the best performance. The BIOS likely shows a warning because it's trying to protect you. Be content with your setup. The gap between 4.8 and 5.0 will be minimal.

Your maximum overclock potential for the 8600K depends on finding a suitable case. As of 12/01/2017, the percentage of I5-8600k chips that can reach a high vcore around 1.4 with decent stability is around 98%, dropping to 84% at 5.0, 65% at 5.1, 38% at 5.2 and just 13% at 1.4v. Most experts say 1.4v is a fairly safe upper limit for overclocking. The BIOS warning you see might be a precaution. Be content with your setup. You'll see minimal change between 4.8 and 5.0. Thank you. Even if you try 1.36, the error persists.
