I have a Pentium G3258 on my board and it's already overclocked. I'm wondering if it's possible to upgrade to an i5 and further overclock it using the same board, or if these lower-end boards are limited to only overclocking the G3258. If not, I might just opt for a Z97.

It seems they are limited to overclocking the G3258. If you don’t already have the updated CPU, it might be best to obtain a Skylake chip along with a Z170.

Onus says they seem limited to overclocking the G3258. If you haven’t got the updated CPU yet, perhaps it would be best to switch to a Skylake chip and a Z170. With the proper BIOS, overclocking might still be possible.

You cant overclock an i5 with an H81, and if there is a modified bios out there to enable it, the h81 is not going to have the quality vrm's to give you a good stable OC.
As said, if you need to do a CPU/MoBo update then you might as well go up to skylake.

How much more expensive is skylake? I'm only 16 I had a time affording this, if I can't afford skylake i'll just go for a used z97/z87

Not understanding your origin will complicate pricing discussions. In the UK, it makes more sense to invest a bit more in the Skylake board and chip, as both the i5-6600k CPU with sufficient memory would cost around £325, while the i5-4690k and Z97 Pro4 MB together would be about £265-£270. If you haven’t purchased either the i5 chip or the Z97 board, focus on the Skylake option.
Keep in mind you’ll need an aftermarket cooler, which suggests you likely already have one installed since you’ve overclocked.

Not understanding your background will make price comparisons tricky, but here in the UK, saving a bit more for the Skylake board and chip would be smarter. Both the i5-6600k CPU and a decent amount of memory would cost around £325, while the i5-4690k and Z97 Pro4 MB would come to about £265-£270 together. If you haven’t bought either the i5 chip or the Z97 board, it makes sense to focus on the Skylake.
Keep in mind you’ll need an aftermarket cooler, but it’s likely you already have one since you’ve overclocked before.

I’m shifting my approach now—I can’t afford a new board anymore, so my main question is whether the i5 4460 would work with an H81 board at all. Would it even boot up initially because of the older BIOS? Of course, I’ll still have the Pentium for updates if needed, but I’m only upgrading to the i5 to fix the stuttering in GTA 5. Both are 4th generation Haswell processors, right? So should it work?

Think it needs a BIOS update.

Onus:
I'm fairly certain they can only increase the clock speed of the G3258. If you don't already possess the updated CPU, perhaps it would be best to acquire a Skylake processor and a Z170. Nope, most H81 models should also support overclocking an i5 similar to mine.
