I strongly disagree with that perspective. A few months ago I was using a 4C/8T Xeon E3-1231v3, which is essentially an i7-4790 minus 200 MHz—still 100 MHz faster than the 4590. It struggled to keep up with my GTX 1660 Super in Elden Ring, and I experienced slowdowns due to CPU bottlenecks. Even with a 2x8GB DDR3-2400 upgrade, performance remained poor in Elden Ring at 1080p. Control was another case where the CPU couldn’t handle the 1660 Super. It reminded me of gaming experiences when running a GTX 970 with a Pentium G3258, but things improved after switching to an i5-12400F.
Your comment kinda encouraged me to just go for it. I just bought an optiplex with a 4570 in it and a gt1030 with ddr5 as well as 8gigs of ram and a 500gb SSD. All for just 100€. That is amazing value in my opinion and a great first PC. I will just put open office on that thing and some simpler kid-friendly games and it will make a good suprise for the kids. They obviously can't play Elden Ring on that thing, but I don't want them to anyways. Thanks for all your guys input.

Thanks for the ideas. I’ll check the Steam version for the Spyro-Trilogy and make sure it’s suitable for younger players. I need to understand the age limits so they can enjoy it safely. Also, I should keep an eye on other games like Doom that might be too intense.
I've played with a 4690k +3060 setup—it functions, though Minecraft can feel sluggish during chunk loading. Switching to a 5600x helped improve performance. Of course, it still works.
Sure, as long as it feels good, I’m okay. The main thing on my mind is whether I should attempt to upgrade my cheap Xeon 1230 v3 for this little rig. Not every game will run smoothly, but some titles really stand out and could use the extra processing power. After all, I’m playing on my Steam Deck with just 4GB/8GB RAM. That would add about 30EUR in cost—minus the price of the i5—making it potentially worthwhile. A 5600X would definitely be better than what I currently have, but the price is roughly double what I’m spending now. I was actually aiming for a 3200 or 3400G model, but those are too costly compared to what I need.
Lol. It’s okay not to be perfect—my little one is 4 and playing Warframe with her sister tomorrow, while my older kid is on Mechwarrior 5 with me. I can’t pretend to be consistent. I’ve played Wolfenstein when I was four and DOOM soon after. I keep an eye on what they’re doing, make sure they don’t install anything, but let them try what seems safe. I avoid games like Dead By Daylight or COD for now. Let’s focus on the more wild, sci-fi stuff that feels real right now.

These are my girlfriend’s kids, and I won’t tell her how to treat them. Personally, I got my own copy of UT99 when I was 12... I understand what you’re going through. There were some simple tricks to bypass age limits.
