I recently attempted to install a hard drive while the PC was powered on (though I realize it might be a mistake now), and when I connected the SATA power, the whole system shut down and it won’t start. I’ve owned this computer for more than four years without any problems.

Is the drive connected yet? It seems possible the device is listed first in the boot sequence, which might be contributing to the problem.

Following that event I took out the drive, but it still doesn’t power up.

If you're not getting any response from the power on button, I'd check the PSU with a paperclip test to see if it's faulty. Once confirmed, I'd proceed to the motherboard. If that doesn't work, I'd move on to troubleshooting further.

But he connected SATA power while the system was active and handled some components, which means he probably doesn’t understand much. I had to guess based on what happened—I saved this article when I realized I once removed the bridge from my Crossfire because it began showing artifacts during a competitive gaming match...fortunately I didn’t damage my card, and I knew better than to repeat that mistake... lol

Certainly. If the PSU functions properly, it should reset the CMOS and allow a retry.

I'll strip it down to the essentials: Mobo, CPU, one RAM stick, and the PSU connected. No extra drives, just testing if it reaches BIOS. Suggest clearing CMOS for a clean start.
