Macintosh OS 8.6 was nearly the platform for the initial Halo release... Just a joke, though. Windows 8.1 works well for gaming!

I recommend Windows 8.1 Core OEM right now. It offers everything you need for gaming and lacks Aero effects, which means your GPU won’t waste resources on translucent window borders.

OEM versions don’t provide any complimentary Microsoft direct assistance from support staff. Licenses are linked to the initial machine you install and activate on, and they cover hardware changes except for switching to a different motherboard model. These versions aren’t suitable for upgrading from an older Windows OS unless you’re certain about it and prefer the cost. Choose accordingly.

This simply indicates that MS can't be contacted directly. Your support team remains available through their forum. Using phone activation lets you work around this restriction. Once more, this is just a point in the EULA limitation, and the fix is again activating your phone. Still, I wanted to explain why I recommended Windows 8.1 Pro.

Due to these specific factors. And OEM isn't available everywhere. For instance, I can only purchase standard models, probably because of location restrictions unless you shop online. The cost usually varies by 10-20$, which is a good deal if it eliminates the need to call them constantly. Also, when reaching out to support, terms of service apply—your key becomes tied to the motherboard. You can find more details at http://www.overclock.net/t/156182/oem-clarification. It might not be worth the effort overall... Also, consider the differences between versions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_8_editions You should review them to determine what fits your requirements. For me, remote desktop is very useful, but it may not be necessary for everyone...
