I returned from a two-week vacation and my PC won't start. I think the motherboard might be dead, but before buying a new one, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something else.
The MB standby power light turns green when plugged in, but when I power on using the case button the CPU fan spins but then stops suddenly.
I've taken out or unplugged all components—hard drives, graphics card, Wi-Fi card, RAM sticks, peripherals—and tried booting, but it still doesn't work; same problem: CPU fan spins but then stops abruptly.
I also tried shorting the power pins, but that didn't help either.
The motherboard and CPU are over 14 years old, while other parts are newer. The specs with the year in brackets are:
Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D-E (2010)
CPU: Intel Core i5 750 2.66G s1156, Fenrir CPU fan (2010)
PSU: Corsair TX Series, 650 Watt (2010)
SSD: 120GB Samsung 840 Evo (2014)
GPU: ASUS NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030 GDDR4 2GB Graphics Card, PCI Express 3.0 (2022)
Is there anything else I could try or should I just get a new machine?
Thanks
Al

It might be an issue with the PSU, leading to a fail safe mode if you have another unit available; otherwise, I’d expect the board to be dead or the CPU to fail, which is common in similar cases. Would choose a more modern option if budget allows.
