I recently been getting slow times when playing all my online games.
I tried resetting my network settings before things got bad. Now I'm using a direct link between my PC and the modem/router. Issues started about two weeks ago, so I can't play online games or chat on Discord without slow lags and sudden spikes in latency. I've swapped out my modem, router, and cable, run internet speed tests, and tried everything else to find what's wrong but couldn't solve it. What other steps should I take?
Since every computer has a network card built in, what kind is yours? Please check which version of the BIOS it has right now. If you are using an extra NIC stick, tell me that too. What model and make do you have for your router? It might be good to see if there are any software updates waiting on that router.
My Motherboard is a ROG STRIX Z690-A with Wi-Fi D4 support. The BIOS version is 2004, and the router is an R6700AX AX1800 model. I updated my BIOS two months ago and the router firmware yesterday when I set it up. Now I have a PCIe WiFi card that I just plugged into my motherboard to connect my Vive VR headset wirelessly.
Try running just one network adapter while testing things out. Checking download and upload speeds over time is a quick way to tell if something feels off. But this method can be misleading sometimes. One thing I like doing is turn on the Resource Monitor, point it at my ethernet cards, start sending data with voice chat, then watch what happens. If you see the connection drop to zero for short bursts, that means your internet is unstable right now. If you switch to wireless and the issue disappears, then maybe it's a hardware problem. If both methods show similar issues, check with your ISP instead. I used to get intermittent upload signal loss from my phone line. Downloads worked fine, normal web browsing looked great, but gaming was full of high lag and slow loading times.
