I recently assembled a new computer for my sister, but it keeps shutting down unexpectedly.
Hello, I recently bought several components from Newegg to assemble a high-performance PC for my sister, designed for streaming and gaming at full resolution. Here are the details: Processor: Ryzen 9 5950X with Noctua NH-D15 cooler; RAM: 2x Corsair Vengeance 8GB 3200MHz; GPU: Asus Rog Strix RTX3080 12GB; Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus; Storage: Samsung 970 TB SSD 2TB; Power Supply: Corsair RM750x 2018. The issue is random restarts, showing event ID41 in the event viewer—essentially nothing. She’s watching a video on YouTube, playing a game, and then it just restarts. So far, no success. Checked temperatures: CPU stays below 80°C, GPU and chipset under 70°C, SSD under 50°C. Temperatures were stable during a 30-minute AIDA64 test. I used a non-removable PSU (CyberPower Pure Sine Wave CP1500PFCLC) to boost input current. Tested the SSD with Samsung Magician—no errors in a 40-minute full test. Ran Windows 10 and 11, but reboots still occur randomly. Disabled XMP profile, set game mode in Ryzen Master, tried three different BIOS versions. Completed an AIDA64 stress test for 30 minutes; temperatures remained stable with no crashes. On the PSU display, an LCD showed a peak wattage of 696W during the stress test—still within safe limits, suggesting the PSU is near its limit but capable of handling high load. Used Windows High Performance mode. The RAM worked fine in my previous system, and the PSU performed without issues. I’ve read many potential causes: PSU quality, RAM condition, motherboard health, CPU condition, or even software settings. I’m still within the RMA window with Newegg, as I got the parts less than a month ago. What about you? Have you faced similar problems? Any suggestions for resolving this? Thanks for your feedback—I might update my post later if I consider more options. DxDiag.txt
Have you explored adjusting the BIOS settings to control the PC's actions after a power cut? Making it prevent restart while keeping it powered down might help identify some problems. Additionally, keep the system running through the BIOS interface and observe whether it reboots unexpectedly.
I’m confident I can handle this. Keeping the device off during a power outage could help eliminate concerns about potential malfunctions or safety risks.
It’s likely clear to see—have you verified that the power switch and reset button connections are firmly in place on the motherboard? Might the reset button be defective? I’d consider removing the reset button pins to confirm it isn’t linked to the case. As a side note, I’ve noticed similar issues in PCs where faulty USB connections cause unexpected short circuits.
I've been considering the same thing, so I just took out the reset button from the motherboard. The only connections left on the board are power and lights.
I recently viewed a video from another YouTuber explaining how certain 30 series cards can trigger an unusually high draw, causing the system to shut down if your PSU isn’t sufficient. They also touched on ripple issues, though I’m not sure they were the same problem. It was mentioned that the 3090 could spike up to several hundred watts. If you have a power supply with higher capacity, consider replacing it. I’m trying to find the link but unsure if posting is permitted. Some technicians suggested swapping the PSU as a solution. Based on your load, I’d recommend upgrading to a 1000W unit. Edited October 15, 2022 by FeeNiX
Simplifying troubleshooting focuses on eliminating as many factors as you can
If you have an affordable graphics card nearby, replacing it might help determine if the issue persists. It could be simpler and avoid more complications than swapping out a power supply unit.
