I purchased an 1151 motherboard expecting compatibility with my Core i5 8500, but it doesn’t work. I’m considering returning the board. Should I return it and spend $170 CAD on a 300-series board for my i5 8500, or should I sell my i5 and upgrade to an i7 6700? Alternatively, can I return the board and get the CPU to start fresh?

Refurbished Ryzen offers significant savings compared to the i5 8500. Midrange boards such as the gaming plus/tomahawk are also very affordable, often much less expensive than the 170CAD model. Likely under half the original cost. You can even upgrade it with a BIOS change and a CPU pad to connect SKT to ground, allowing the board to power on. Using a used Ryzen is generally more cost-effective while still providing a clear path toward higher-end options like the 5800X3D or 5950X.
