I own a PC I assembled about two years ago, and since then I've faced persistent "thermal problems," as highlighted in the Tech Support Challenge (video @timestamp). Since its launch, I've dealt with frequent shutdowns, replaced several components—like the GPU, motherboard, and power supply—and experimented with almost every fan setup imaginable, plus ran various software tests. Back then, it was a high-performance machine with no major compromises, but it never functioned perfectly. To play even basic MMORPGs like EverQuest is still possible, though.

Original specs: Lian Li O11 Dynamic XL Cooler Master V850 Gold (now Seasonic Prime TX-1000), ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Formula (now ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero), AMD Ryzen 9 5950x, Radeon RX 6900XT (now ASUS ROG STRIX 3090 White OC), Team T-Force XTreem ARGB 64gb (2 x 32gb) DDR4 3600, Samsung 1tb 980 Pro NVME, a pair of 4tb Seagate HDDs with 13x Lian Li fans. The system used AL/SL settings.

Important notes on testing: I’m currently unable to move much, mostly confined to my chair. Swapping parts or disassembling for tests was manageable most of the time, but it slowed down the process significantly. I don’t have much free time for such tasks, as I prioritize my kids and other responsibilities. While my system is impressive, budget limits mean I can’t easily replace components on a whim. I’ve saved a lot to build what I have.

I had a second GPU already planned for next year to upgrade my fiancé’s setup. But this project has taken up a lot of time and effort.

Details of changes: I replaced the original AMD Radeon RX 6900XT with the MSRP drop, the ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Formula, and the Cooler Master V850 Gold. I installed the 3090, hoping it might be the culprit. I also swapped in the 3090 White for better looks, though supply issues delayed that. The motherboard was sourced from a forum listing labeled "H2O Tier" and needed water cooling because of VRM overheating risks. After installing the new PSU, I found the real issue: the PSU fan detached from its mounting point. Under load, it would spin freely but failed to cool properly, causing shutdowns. Thank you to CM for resolving this after so many attempts!

In short, after two years of trial and error—checking OC profiles, disabling boost, swapping parts—I discovered a faulty PSU fan that was the root cause. Thanks for your help, Jake! P.S. I’m keeping the original black Seasonic cables hidden until I can install the new ones, and I’ll add some white sleeves for the AIO hoses later.
