I purchased a Core i5-10400 and thought a bit foolishly I placed the stock fan on my couch with its side down so the thermal paste would stick there. No one seems to want that. There’s still some paste left on the fan, but it remains on the couch. I haven’t used it yet since I had to buy the motherboard and RAM. Honestly, I’m just being silly.

Hey! I tried that but it affected my carpet. A photo would make it clearer. The thermal paste should still function well. The main concern is whether you have enough to cover all the gaps. It seems you might need more, which could be a good time to order extra along with your RAM and memory.

Purchase an inexpensive tube from eBay and use it prior to installation. Avoid any material that has come into contact with the sofa.

Verify the temperature while idle. If the thermal paste isn't functioning properly, the idle temperature will exceed 40℃. (Running on Windows, no background processes)

Thermal paste serves to enhance heat movement between the CPU and the cooler's base. It doesn't generate cooling power by itself; instead, it helps bridge microscopic gaps and irregularities on metal surfaces with a conductive substance. Without it, air pockets can restrict flow, similar to how gaps between glass panes block heat transfer. If the paste is uneven or missing in some spots, temperature may rise slightly or the fan might work harder to compensate. For best results, clean the cooler thoroughly, remove old paste using a solvent, and apply a generous amount of paste to the CPU surface—either a small blob or thin layers—to ensure even coverage.
