Hey everyone, I'm getting ready to assemble my first gaming PC. I'm aiming for 1440p and 4K resolution, so I'm leaning toward the 7900 XTX. I'm a bit uncertain about the motherboard, CPU, and RAM choices—originally I went with AM5 but now I'm considering switching to AM4. I figured I could cut around $200 by choosing AM4. Are there any major downsides to this path aside from the limited upgrade options?

Are you in an area close to a microcenter? It’s probably not worth investing in the AM4 platform or DDR4 right now. You’re getting a 7900xtx, so there’s no need to worry about funding. Where exactly are you?

I’m located in Ireland, so we lack a strong PC component database. We often need to source parts from across Europe. The main challenge isn’t funding—it’s finding the right components. If you’re looking for ways to save, any tips would be really helpful.

Unless your finances are very tight (which they aren't with the 7900XTX), I'd avoid AM4. LGA1700 and AM5 perform significantly better now.

I recommend the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 4.2 GHz 8-core chip for this system. Pair it with the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 240 A-RGB for cooling. Use the Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX ATX AM5 board. Install the G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB 32 GB DDR5-6000 memory. Connect the Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB M.2-2280 NVMe SSD. Finish with the Phanteks Eclipse G300A case and MSI MAG A850GL power supply. All costs sum to approximately €1442.32, including shipping and taxes.

Consider AMD AM5 for better performance and upgrade options if you can't save much money.

AM4 is currently a non-functional system with no future improvements. AM5 is expected to remain available for another couple of generations.
