Hello there, hive mind. I’m reaching out hoping someone here has faced similar challenges and shared useful tips or general knowledge. I recently got an old HP Z800 from a colleague and set up Proxmox on it. He added a couple of graphics cards for fun. I plan to send them to the virtual machines, but I’m a bit worried. Since the motherboard doesn’t have its own display output, will removing that option cause trouble? Also, I installed a CD drive after the installation was complete. I’m pretty sure I’ll need to connect it to the host in the VM environment. I’m concerned about whether Proxmox or the Z800’s BIOS would handle this setup without issues. Could mounting the drive directly on the host be necessary? Or would it be better to keep the drive mounted for the VMs? I’d really appreciate any advice or clarification you can provide. Thanks a lot!

for the first query, proxmox operates smoothly without any GPU, though it’s important to note that proxmox requires a GPU to encode the video stream from the VM, which you can monitor via the Proxmox web interface. This means excluding GPU access from Proxmox prevents remote connections to the VMs. Additionally, it’s useful to mention that you can distribute a GPU device among multiple VMs, allowing one graphics card to be shared between Proxmox and a VM, effectively resolving the issue described earlier.

It doesn't seem to be an issue. Your Proxmox server lacks a GPU and all VMs are showing correctly. Only certain GPUs can be split, which isn't entirely simple. As long as the BIOS allows headless booting (and Z800s are likely workstations), it should work fine. You should be able to transfer the entire device using any mount, though I haven't explored that feature much since you can easily emulate a drive with an ISO loaded.
