I have a really slow internet connection right now
Hi everyone, so up until 3 days ago the internet worked fine in this house. I could download stuff on Steam at about 8-9 megabits per second and games ran okay. Boom, everything broke down right now and I'm lagging constantly to the point where I can't play anymore. I did a speed test and it says my speeds are around 50-60 megabits per second for downloads and 20 megabits per second for uploads. I live in an apartment shared with six people, so I understand how much strain that puts on the house's internet, but until my roommate came back from vacation, things were terrible. It's worth noting that me and this guy don't get along; I would go as far to say he might be throttling my speeds if that even counts. Honestly, it is just a nightmare for me right now. If anyone can help with poor grammar or explain how this happens, please let me know thanks.
Speedtest numbers tell you you'll still get about 7 to 8 MB per byte when downloading a bit slower, but it won't cause problems for gaming. Most games need less than 1 Mbps and are usually around 300 Kbps, so you have plenty of connection room. What makes games lag is either too many dropped packets or big jumps in delay time. Try running a constant ping test to 8.8.8.8 and see if you get any drops or spikes over 100 milliseconds. You can also run pings all the time to your router's IP address, and you should get between 1 to 3 milliseconds with no drops at all. If you're on Wi-Fi, it's very common that games lag because of interference from outside signals inside your home or other people using your house.
