I just put in the latest 5700x Ryzen 9 to swap out my 3700x. When I powered it up, it asked for a new TPM and I was surprised to find myself locked out. But since I had some backups, I managed to recover about 85% of my files.

It's unusual since TPM is active and your CPU has been modified... were you also using BitLocker?

You're asking about the meaning of "locked out." It likely refers to being unable to access something, such as a door, account, or system.

It’s becoming more frequent, right? Do you have a Microsoft account? I believed it’s meant to store your login details there.

To prevent being locked out by TPM, ensure it remains enabled and properly configured. Disabling it entirely can cause issues, so verify its status and settings before making changes.

To the best of my understanding, it isn't the TPM itself that's at fault, so you can disable it during BIOS updates. The issue lies with services such as Windows Hello and Bitlocker, which rely on the TPM, meaning your keys must be stored elsewhere if you modify the TPM through CPU upgrades (unless it's a dedicated hardware TPM).

When configuring BitLocker, it creates recovery keys. Keep them prepared.

I realized this based on what I mentioned earlier—I usually switch CPUs, but it never changed. I also flipped it on and off randomly to check for performance benefits, but nothing happened. Of course, I’m not using any of the data-gathering tricks Microsoft provides.

I'm worried about my ability to do that, Dave...
