I've experienced thermal problems with my laptop recently and initially thought it was just old thermal paste. Since I hadn't used it in two years and bought it second-hand, I decided to install some thermal grizzly Kryo. When I put it on, the computer actually shut down more than usual—definitely a problem. This reminds me of the #m1004 issue. I applied a decent amount to avoid spillage, but did you think I put too little? By examining the die on the CPU and the heatsink, I could see the paste clearly. Is this normal? Should I add more? Please share the pictures if you want further help.
According to Dell's website, the M1004 model is experiencing overheating. Have you checked and cleaned the fans and heatsinks? Were the screws tightened correctly? Did any connectors, plugs, or cables fail to connect? Was the fan running? You might want to note that the adhesive used seems a bit excessive, as it spilled over the die.
Consider running the Dell Diagnostic Test to verify the processor and fan after reapplying thermal paste and reassembling the heatsink.
There isn't really a problem because it just releases excessively, so better to have more than less. I think they got the right amount. It seems the second copper block wasn't connecting properly. If the chipset or VRMs overheated, it would shut down.
