What do you think about the value of free programs compared to paid options?

Bitdefender Total Security before 'common sense' usually offers similar malware defense. However, it might lack additional tools such as cleanup functions and a firewall, which are available at no extra cost.

AVG free 2015 functions well. I run it on my Mac since I’m new to security matters.

I don't rely on Windows Firewall or Windows Defender for regular scans. System checks are handled manually.

I previously relied on Malwarebytes, but I discovered it causes my computer to freeze with a blue screen.

I've consistently relied on AVG and Malwarebytes. They're familiar to me and they seem effective.

Malwarebytes identifies 10 to 20 malicious files each month (rough approximation). A manual check finds 2 to 3 threats. Common sense flags over 100 random links online—better avoid clicking unless sure.

The available options are sufficient on their own. Just need to stay informed while exploring the internet, avoid clicking random links, and refrain from downloading anything without caution. I rely on Windows Defender (built-in antivirus for Windows 8.1) and the free Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as a monthly subscription scanner.
