Hey everyone, I bought a Radeon 6950 XT from ASUS ROG Strix OC recently. My PC feels noticeably slower now compared to before. I’m talking about Windows and various games in general. I’m considering returning it because the return window ends on January 31, 2023, and I might be able to get a newer model like the Radeon 7900 XT or XTX. The unit cost was 939 euros. My current setup includes an FSP RAIDER PSU with a 750W cooler, a Deepcool Gamer Storm CPU (Kaby Lake, 7600K, overclocked to 4.8GHz), MSI Z270 motherboard, 16GB Trident Z RAM at 3200MHz, and a 240GB SSD. The old GPU is an Inno3D GTX 1070 iChill X3 with 8GB GDDR5. In games, I see higher FPS but smoother performance isn’t there—maybe it’s the graphics card or something else limiting speed? Sometimes when I type in browsers like YouTube, everything feels sluggish and lags after a second.

Your processor is getting overwhelmed under heavy demand. With the older GPU, it stays at full capacity while the CPU remains idle—around 30% usage on one core, leaving plenty for other work. Switching to your 6950 XT would make that core busy with gaming, leaving little room for other tasks like web browsing. The best solution is upgrading the CPU. Running V-sync can help reduce stutter but won’t fully resolve the issue. If you can afford it, a upgrade to something like the 13600K would be ideal. Edited December 9, 2022 by Pixelfie

CPU limitation is the issue. The delay you notice comes from the GPU pausing while your CPU tries to pass data for the next frame, since the CPU can't keep up. A 7600K processor is roughly equivalent to a typical office PC these days—though it might actually run slower, with many machines using 4c/8t i3s or even 6c/12t i5s in around $400-500 HP models.

Consider returning the GPU now and hold off until the Radeon 7900 XT or XTX is available.

It would perform significantly better compared to the 6950XT, making any issues almost imperceptible.

You have the option, but unless you also enhance your CPU, the problem will only intensify since a more powerful GPU is added. If you intend to upgrade the CPU, it makes sense, though it might sell out fast. The 1070 was completely used up, unlike the 6950 XT which didn’t have to wait on the CPU.

The performance feels smooth thanks to the GTX 1070, but I’m concerned about the power supply. It’s only 750W, while my new GPU requires around 850-1000W. I think the lag comes from the CPU because it’s handling more tasks now. When I check Task Manager, the CPU usage stays the same as before, yet the system still feels sluggish.

Essentially yes. The new GPU processes data so quickly it surpasses what the CPU can supply, causing delays and inconsistent frame rates—this results in stuttering or choppy gameplay. How noticeable this is depends on your setup. Regarding Windows performance, it can lag during gaming but may run smoothly when idle.

I'm currently in Germany and I'm unsure how to locate the new Radeon 7900 XT/XTX. Can you buy it directly from amd.com?
