They seem like a solid group because their son owns such a powerful machine. The PC you mentioned has already failed, but they’re offering it to you for free next week. They think it’s worth keeping since it outperforms your current setup, even though the MOMs won’t work together. I’m wondering if it’s worth the effort and whether the CPU will still function once it’s fixed.

If the CPU were melted, I’d study it closely to understand its condition. (Updated)

Unless you can provide clear, detailed pictures of the CPU, wait until you have it so you can examine it first. It’s not very useful to purchase something without knowing if it’s even in good condition, based on vague descriptions. If it looks fine, you might want to check if a friend has a compatible MB and ask them to try it. You could also contact the nearest tech repair shop or PC store to see if they can help test it for a small fee.

Also, the silencer wasn't the CPU; it might be the PSU or MBO.

If the PSU was what blew then hopefully only the PSU itself was damaged, but without at least having a look at the CPU & motherboard, it is impossible to say. If the motherboard's VRM area is visibly burned, then the CPU is likely to be fried too. If the motherboard looks fine, then hopefully you're good. From a 9100F? Absolutely, IF you can find a not outrageously priced motherboard.

I'll still go by what I've said. Hold off buying anything at least until the item is in your hand. At the very least : Call it from my bad experience of buying something right after being promised something. Promise was broken, bought item eating dust. Also : Unless the owner is a dumdum, or really wanted to upgrade/downgrade to an incompatible MB. There's no way he couldn't test it with a new mobo himself. Just giving you possibility to ponder about before spending moneh Whether or not a fried CPU can fry a working MB though is out of my scope of knowledge.
