So I'm one of those Verizon customers who got the unlimited plan from the start. Recently they raised the price by twenty dollars, and yesterday they cut me off from tethering to my home computer—even though I’m paying another twenty a month. I managed to work around it using an app called FoxFi, but unfortunately that didn’t work out because Verizon has completely shut me off. Now my house and gadgets are pretty useless... my Blu-ray player (Xbox One) needs an update, so I can’t even do my morning workouts anymore. I’m sure without the internet I’ll be more productive on other projects I’ve been putting off—maybe even pick up digital art again. I still use a lot of YouTube for motivation, but it’s holding me back on some woodworking plans too. The slow connection is really the biggest issue for living in rural areas. Hopefully FoxFi fixes this soon, or else my F@H average will take a hit!

Take care and pay the $20 each month. FoxFi worked well initially, but I realized I was tethering even when I thought otherwise. It seems I logged around 450GB through it.

He is spending a total of $40 extra each month to retain the features he previously owned.

You're paying $20 for all the data and you're worried about Verizon's Tethering app. That would be around $40, but it's actually just $20 legally.

Not really upset, just a bit disappointed. I might have to accept it now, but I checked and it seems about 30 dollars. I’ll just keep checking to see if having slower internet at home will be better than relying on my phone while I’m away. My wife gets restless when she can’t access Pinterest, especially during errands or drills.

One of my coworkers is facing the same problem you're dealing with regarding unlimited data and tethering. He thinks it's worth it if he uses it extensively and gets good value. If you rely on it a lot and see a return, it might be worth the cost. I'd feel the same way too.

I understand the concerns about violating the ToS/ToC, though I’ve never had any real disagreements with that. When something is taken away after you’ve relied on it for a while, it can feel quite unexpected. I usually spend around 60GB each month streaming Netflix or browsing the web on my tablet, so it might be worth considering. Just need to adjust the budget slightly by cutting back a bit.

It's frustrating when features you're familiar with get removed from the plan, even if they don't align with the rules. I'm sure you understand the situation and hope it works within your budget. Using it when needed makes it worthwhile!

Foxfi is now operational again. It became available to me around November 20th when I attempted to use it. I found only one mention online about it being fixed, which didn’t convince me. Surprisingly, it functions properly! It worked at 11:10 PM EST on November 24th after I restarted my phone. I’m using a non-rooted Galaxy S5 with a Verizon grandfathered unlimited plan.
