It's interesting you mention using something other than the default defender. With Vista and the shift toward user rights, it's really hard to get malware without clicking "Yes" or disabling a key feature. Most viruses today require you to agree to something unexpected unless you turn off protections.
Congratulations on upgrading to AVG. I've relied on AVG's free tools and have always been satisfied.
