I used Norton, but it stopped working due to LiveUpdate issues. It doesn’t seem worth the effort now that I’m planning a new computer, so I’m switching to AVG instead.

It's interesting you mention using something other than the default defender. With Vista and the shift toward user rights, it's really hard to get malware without clicking "Yes" or disabling a key feature. Most viruses today require you to agree to something unexpected unless you turn off protections.
