I've been nearing my advertised internet speeds until today when I connected to a mobile hotspot and then switched to Wi-Fi. My downloads remained around 4 Mbps on Speedtest, while my phone only got about 8 Mbps. However, my upload speeds are fine. If anyone can clarify this, it would be really helpful.
Find the position of your router inside the home. Determine the distance between you and your cabinet (green junction box). Identify how many devices are connected simultaneously. Check how many individuals are using it during busy periods.
The router is roughly five meters away, linked through Ethernet, with your main switch located just a block away. It's situated on the opposite side of the street, and only you're using it for streaming and browsing while others aren't.
Hey there! Did you notice the same pattern after restarting your router and modem? You can access modem statistics at http://192.168.100.1.
Switching to Wi-Fi only slightly improves speed; if possible, use your Ethernet cable as suggested. Keep the router away from ceramic objects that can block the signal. On Wi-Fi, try changing the channel to 3, 6, 9, or 12. Be aware that if your nearest junction box is full, you might connect to a farther one, resulting in slower speeds.
The reboot of the modem resolved the issue, thank you for your assistance.
You likely need a fresh router. I connect to my ISP modem and join a mesh network to show my Wi-Fi. My partner had a similar issue with her connection speed, but it wasn’t working properly. A router that’s more than two years old probably isn’t fast enough. There could be a cheaper issue at play. Your Ethernet cable might be faulty. If yours isn’t Cat6—though Cat7 is available but sometimes unnecessary—or the cable itself is damaged, a broken connection could be the problem. I replaced a damaged Cat6 cable and it resolved the issue completely. So upgrading your Ethernet cable or getting a new router should help!
