Connecting directly from your computer to the modem means you’re not using a NAT setup. Your device will receive a public IP address. Be sure to configure a strong firewall, as the router’s firewall can no longer act as a barrier. Then allow specific ports and set up iptable rules for forwarding. Consider turning off the router altogether if possible.

They told you their parents won’t allow port forwarding, but you believe they will let you connect a PC through the modem. In short, parents handle the costs and decide your access. Breaking rules to get around restrictions is essentially asking for a ban on using the Internet. On the other hand, the original poster had a valid request and tried to explain why port forwarding is safe. Suggesting alternatives is risky, but their approach was reasonable from the start.
