I can't seem to access the BIOS settings after resetting it.
Hi everyone, I’m relatively new to building PCs, but I've been doing it for about five months and have been pretty dedicated to gaming. Just yesterday, I decided to upgrade my hard drive because it was completely full.
I’d actually just finished cleaning my PC for the first time – using compressed air, carefully – and I wasn’t sure if that had anything to do with the problem. But I'm not a technician, so… Anyway, I installed the new drive and tried to boot up, but it wouldn’t post. The fans and LEDs would flicker on for a second then shut off. Panicked, I started looking online for troubleshooting solutions and found a CMOS reset seemed like a good first step. Before doing that, I’d also unplugged the new drive, but that didn't solve anything.
After resetting the CMOS, I booted up and was relieved, but then I got stuck on the “enter BIOS” screen with two errors: "Keyboard Not Detected" and something about a SATA RAID configuration. My keyboard is plugged in, and it’s an RGB one, so it lights up – which I think indicates that my ports are working, though I could be mistaken. It’s even lit up when the PC is off, which is strange and something I've never encountered before.
Here are my specs: an AMD Ryzen 7 3700x, an MSI VENTUS 2070 Super graphics card, an ASUS Rog Strix B450-F gaming motherboard, an EVGA 650 BQ power supply, a stock Wraith Prism cooler, a 240GB Kingston SSD, and a 2TB hard drive. I’ve searched everywhere for information about this issue without any luck. Also, please excuse my English.
Make sure your keyboard is connected – ideally, plug it into one of the black ports located beneath the PS2 port on the back of your motherboard. If that doesn’t work, try the blue USB port right below the ROG logo on the I/O shield. If that still doesn’t connect, you might need to borrow a PS2 keyboard and plug it into the round port above the USB ports. Occasionally, even on newer motherboards, certain keyboards just won’t be recognized. I run into this problem every time I reset my CMOS on my Z170 Hero VIII, and I always have to use a different, simpler USB keyboard. It seems like some of the more advanced USB keyboards are particularly prone to these issues.
Honestly, I was pretty shocked—I’ve worked with hundreds of systems over the years and haven't encountered anything like this before. It all started when I reset the CMOS on my Hero VIII and plugged in a new keyboard. To get it working, I had to disconnect an older USB keyboard entirely. But even after that, trying different USB ports on the back of the motherboard with the new keyboard still seemed to help sometimes; some of them just wouldn't fully function until Windows loaded its drivers.
Hey there, I’ve got a PS/2 keyboard and I’m trying to get it working, but it's not being recognized. Have you ever encountered this before? Maybe I should try resetting the CMOS – could that help?
Yeah. Try doing a hard reset WITH the PS2 keyboard attached.
Is it ACTUALLY a PS2 keyboard, or is it a USB keyboard with a PS2 adapter attached? Because those adapters rarely ever worked.
I stumbled across this old PS/2 keyboard, but it’s not working right. I plugged it into another computer, and nothing—it just won't respond. It could be something with Windows 10, though. I’m probably going to go ahead and buy a new one just to be certain.
I’d like to test something out, so I'm hoping to find a simple keyboard—one without any fancy lights or extra features—and see if it’ll work. If I could just borrow one from someone, that would be ideal.
Ok. Well since that didn't work, I think your next step would be the bench test the unit using my guide as a step by step resource.
