I can't figure out if it's PSU coil whine during PC shutdown ?
I recently assembled a new PC using a Thermaltake GF3 1000W power supply. During shutdown, I noticed a faint whine coming from the PSU. Although not loud, its high pitch makes it quite noticeable. When I replaced it with my previous model, the noise vanished. Attempting to connect this newer PSU with my old system also eliminated the sound. Afterwards, I reached out to Thermaltake, who sent a replacement unit, but unfortunately it still produced the same issue. I am currently preparing to return the faulty PSU. I’m curious about why the whine appears only when paired with my new setup. What might be the underlying reason? I have attached a video (https://gumlet.tv/watch/67cd11e23ae6ee3ff9c333d4) to illustrate the problem (volume may need adjustment).

I also attempted to connect this new PSU to my previous setup, but my old system didn’t generate such noise during shutdown. For context, what are the details of your older system? Are you certain the sound isn’t coming from the PSU fan? You might try placing an A4 sheet into a cylinder and listening closely to pinpoint the source. You may need to remove both side panels of the case to check for the cause. Does the noise vanish when you detach the discrete GPU, leaving only the integrated one?
Details about my previous setup:
Processor: Intel core-i7 11th generation (locked, no built-in GPU)
Motherboard: Gigabyte B560 Aorus ax wifi
RAM: Corsair vengeance 2*8 G
Storage: Samsung 970 EVO 1T SSD
Storage:
Western Digital WD_BLACK 2 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: MSI GTX1070Ti Titanium
Case: Be quiet! Pure base 600
Power Supply: Thermaltake PF1 850W
Optical Drive: Pioneer DVD
I think the noise comes from the power supply, but I’m not sure which component is responsible. Because the PSU has a silent mode, I also let my new PC sit idle for a while before turning it off, hoping the fan wouldn’t run under this load, but the noise persisted. I’m curious if the sound isn’t coming from the PSU fan at all.
I also attempted to remove my discrete GPU, yet the whine remained during shutdown.
