I've just upgraded to an i7700k and I'm trying to reach over 4.2ghz, but every time I try it the system keeps rebooting with BSOD or Windows recovery. I've also attempted MSI auto-overclocking to anything above 4.2ghz without success, and I was hoping to hit 5ghz. The specs are: I7 7700k, Swifttech H220x prestige watercooler, MSI Z270 M7 gaming board, 32gbs 3000mhz TRIDENT Z RAM, 850w PSU, GTX 1080 Ti Strix OC.

It seems your CPU is running at a low manual voltage that doesn't provide enough power for higher clock speeds. I recommend using a maximum of 1.4v and aiming for around 4.8ghz. Be careful not to affect the bus speed and focus on adjusting the base multiplier.
