I just assembled a used PC with a gigabyte B450M motherboard. When I installed the Ryzen 5 5500 inside, it wouldn’t turn on and stayed on a black screen. The power button didn’t shut it down either. Later, I bought a friend’s old Ryzen 3 3300 hoping to update the BIOS. It worked fine with Windows 10 on the M.2 drive, and I updated the BIOS to version F65C dated 12-25-2023. After that, everything ran smoothly. Now the power button still doesn’t turn off when pressed. I checked the BIOS before swapping back to the Ryzen 5 5500 to confirm updates. The same problems persist. I cleared the CMOS and tried booting with just one RAM stick. Does this MOBO support the Ryzen 5 5500? My friend who got the CPU from me had the identical board (MSI) and upgraded to the Ryzen 5 5600, so I’m really puzzled. Here are the specs:
- Gigabyte B450M motherboard (used)
- Ryzen 5 5500 (new)
- DDR4 memory, 2×8GB sticks (new)
- 1650 Super GPU (used)
- 500W thermalsmart power supply (new)
- 1 TB Kingspec M.2

This safety function of the PSU is guaranteed to operate reliably; I’d destroy it if the power button fails. It suggests the CPU might be nonfunctional. Consider checking the built-in graphics or using another GPU. Ask a friend who owns one for advice.

No, the CPU typically isn't functional immediately after being installed. It requires proper testing and initialization before it operates correctly.

Its rare but it can happen. Anything can be dead on arrival. Since you verified everything else works with the other cpu theres really no other option
