I purchased an inexpensive PC in 2014. Since then, I’ve had to replace the hard drive because it failed and used the replacement key without issues. Recently, I upgraded to a Ryzen system with most components new. I’m still using the same old hard drive, but now I’m experiencing problems reactivating it. Some suggest contacting support and claiming hardware changes, but they only show errors about Microsoft servers. I’m unsure what to do and might need to buy a digital license, which I don’t have funds for.

The system needed a fresh setup because the existing installation was incomplete or corrupted.

You didn't reinstall Windows; you simply used the same storage drive.

It was Windows 10. You signed in using an MS account. You’re in good hands—you receive three machines eligible for that key. If you reach out to MS support, they’ll likely assist you and confirm it’s the same device.

Visit MS support directly. If you had an active system before and provided proof of part replacement, they’ll issue a new key.

The solution involved Windows 8.1, but I upgraded to 10 when it became available for free. After that, I used an MS account for login.

The "10 U" typically stands for "Under Construction." It's often used in project updates to indicate work is ongoing but not yet complete.

I apologize for the hurried typing. It turns out I had used an MS account before installing 10.

Windows 7/8/8.1 licenses can be used to reinstall Windows 10. They can also be shared. If you're unable to do this through your MS account, support can handle the transfer for you.

Absolutely, it's accurate that similar issues occurred with Windows 10 Pro.
